Ian Birtles - Partner

Ian’s financial experience has been pivotal in helping the firm to successfully expand on an international scale from a firm base in the UK.

 

Ian Birtles joined the practice in 1997, and was made an Associate in 2001. He joined the board of Directors in 2004 and in 2011 he was made a Partner.

Ian began his career by training with Bristow Burrell & Co, a Guildford and London-based firm of chartered accountants. He then moved to the City, where he spent 10 years working for international chartered surveyors Gooch & Wagstaff. In 1997, he was recruited as head of finance at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.

As a member of the board he is the Partner responsible for the financial affairs of the practice and forms the commercial team with Andrew Morris and Lennart Grut. Ian works closely with the Partners on all the financial and tax aspects of RSHP projects. He was instrumental in developing the practice’s BAA framework agreement for Terminal 5, Heathrow Airport and was also part of the management team for the Spanish joint venture that delivered Barajas Airport in Madrid.

He is responsible for setting up, structuring and tax planning of the practice’s various overseas entities. Ian has overseen many financial and strategic changes within the office, including the setting up of offices in Madrid, Barcelona, Tokyo, Shanghai, Mexico City and Sydney. Most recently he has managed the transition of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners from a limited company to a limited liability partnership and is currently setting up the practices structure in Colombia.

Ian supports and advises RSHP students on the financial elements of the RIBA Part III qualification.
